Composite sandwich structures are commonly utilized to maximize stiffness in weight-critical applications such as ships and aircraft. High-performance sandwich core materials primarily comprise low-density foam and honeycomb. However they each suffer from drawbacks including the high cost of producing honeycomb and the limited mechanical, thermal and environmental performance of traditional polymeric foams. New high-performance, self-reinforced foam core materials developed by Maxdem alleviate these shortcomings. Based on high strength rigid-rod polyarylenes, they are produced using typical foam processing techniques and possess a rigid closed-cell structure contributing to characteristically high mechanical properties and very low moisture uptake. The combination of these attributes will allow these materials to find wide spread utility in a variety of demanding structural applications in the aerospace and marine sectors as well as the commercial field.
