One-inch spacing grooves/tines is very common for the transverse grooving/tine of cement concrete pavement in the United States from the aspect of traffic safety. From the aspect of annoyance caused by tire/pavement noise, however, 1inch spacing tines/grooves is the worst choice for the spacing. The peak frequency of tire/pavement noise appears very close to 1kHz when the test vehicle runs on cement concrete or asphalt pavement. The vehicle total noise also exists around 1kHz. One-inch spaced tines/grooves causes sharp peak frequency at 1kHz at 60mph(=96km/h). Vehicle speed 60mph(=96km/h) is most popular speed regulated at interstate highways or urban freeways. The authors propose a solution based on a change in specifications of tines/grooves spacing compromising with pavement surface friction.
