Observations have been made on thermal batteries in long term dormant storage as part of the U.S. Army Missile Stockpile Reliability Program (SRP). The SRPs have been proven essential for providing the data needed to ensure the readiness of the Army's missile systems. As part of the program, a sample of thermal batteries are X-rayed and functionally tested. From these component tests, observations of failure modes and statistics have been compiled. This paper will show the reliability over time spent in long term dormant storage of various designs and types of thermal batteries and failure modes associated with each.
