Aluminium alloys reinforced with particulate silicon carbide (AlMMC SiCp) have significantly greater elastic modulus, tensile strength and fatigue strength than conventional aluminium with only a small increase in density. the properties of AlMMC can be tailored to suit a specific applciation through variation of the matrix alloy, weight percentage, size of reinforcement, heat treatment and processing. Properties are isotropic and offer weight or performance benefits to a wide range of industries from automotive and aerospace to high speed manufacturing equipment. AlMMCs benefit from their metallic nature in that they may be forged, machined and finished using existing (although in some cases slightly modified) manufacturing techniques.
