Renewable Energy Projects are generally small, a few tens of MW at most, and often located in rural areas, where renewable energy resources such as geothermal, are usually found or where large tracts of land are available for use by solar or wind power generation facilities. These projects are also characterized by high initial capital costs to cover the lifetime supply of "fuel energy". The combination of non-fossil fuel and local rural power generation results in social, economic and technical benefits, which make renewable energy projects desirable for emerging markets and developing countries. However, the multiple benefits of renewable energy projects are often ignored as these small projects are subjected to the hurdles of long term financing. Finanching costs, procedures and timetable as also unsuitable statutory limitations and Review Standards that are geared for large-scale projects can not be tolerated by the small renewable energy projects. Reduction of the financing hurdles which small renewable energy projects must withstand will accelerate project implementation.
