The UK electricity market was opened up to competition in September 1998 and subsequently a range of retailers have begun to offer 'green power' packages based on the use or development of renewable energy sources. This paper looks at the two different types of scheme, those involving contracts to supply green power and those providing an opportunity for consumers to invest in green power development funds. The domestic consumer market for green power has grown slowly, whereas larger uses, particularly public sector bodies, seem to be taking more of an interest. As demand builds up, there is pressure to install more capacity, and not all of this may be seen as necessarily 'green', with waste combustion projects being a case in point. The governments proposed Climate Change Lavy on the business use of energy should change the situation dramatically. Given that renewables are to be exempted, demand for them should rise rapidly, and the green power market could boom. In which case there would be an ever greater risk of environmentally contentious projects being promoted, and even more need for full source disclosure and source accreditation.
