Collecting positioning data with handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) and mobilecommunication devices is becoming popular in Japan. Needless to say, positioning data are useful notonly for travel and activity surveys, but also for traffic management. When we use positioning data, itis important to choose monitoring devices and systems properly. However, the characteristics ofpositioning data have not yet been examined sufficiently from the perspective of transport planningand traffic management. This paper examines the characteristics of positioning data collected withGPS, enhanced GPS, and PHS (Personal Handy-phone Systems). Positioning data obtained with thesedevices at various locations in urban and suburban areas are compared. Considering various transportmodes, the features of different positioning devices for tracing the path of a traveller from origin todestination are discussed.
