Japanese electronic toll collection (ETC) system was launched in Metropolitan Tokyoarea since end of April 2000 and preparations are now moving ahead toward nationwidedeployment of ETC by 2003. We have developed two types of in-vehicle ETC terminals toenable customers to use ETC service and have begun to install the terminals in some vehiclemodels. One terminal is an on-dash type that operates independently and is mounted atop thedashboard; the other terminal is a built-in type that operates in tandem with a navigationsystem and uses an in-vehicle information display and a speaker. This paper describes anapproach to resolving issues concerning the method of presenting information to drivers whenan ETC system is used.
