The focus of the LACOS project is the validation of autonomous systems capable ofproviding driver assistance for Anti-collision purposes along the lateral axis of the vehicle.Three demonstrator vehicles were equipped by project partners (Fiat, Volkswagen andRenault). A microwave radar and two CCD cameras were installed in the prototype vehiclesin order to monitor the lateral and backward environment to detect approaching vehicles andgive, when necessary, an appropriate warning to the driver. A CCD camera or infrared raysensors were also used for the specific task of detecting the lateral movement of the equippedvehicle. To fulfil these tasks it was decided to use a combination of both computer visionbasedsensors and radar sensors. The paper provides a specific description of the devices andsensors adopted to satisfy the complex requirements specified for the Lateral Control Supportapplication.
