Acidic drainage has long been recognized as the largest environmental liability facing the Canadian mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public through abandoned mines. The Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) Program, formed in 1989, was the first initiative to develop scientifically-based technologies to combat acidic drainage.
