Sodium silicate solutions were applied as inorganic gel formers. The gels or solid materials were formed by simple drying, neutralization with boric acid or by mixing with sodium aluminate solutions. The resulting materials are chemically characterized by the systems Na_2O―SiO_2, Na_2O―B_2O_3―SiO_2, Na_2O―A1_2O_3―SiO_2. The starting compositions of the gels were varied via concentration and amount of starting materials. In each case water plays a significant role in the synthesis of the materials and for their structural development. The dried materials were examined by light microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis in order to investigate the structure. The basic principles established to avoid crystallization are similar to experiences with glass formation from melts.
