Hitherto only chemolithotrophs like Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been used for biobeneficiation studies of sulfide minerals, and in this paper, the results obtained with chemolithotrophs (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) and heterotrophs (Paenibacillus polymyxa) bacteria on the flotation response of chalcopyrite and pyrite minerals have been compared. Pure strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Paenibacillus polymyxa along with mineral adapted strains were used to bring about surface chemical changes of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and thus in their flotation behavior. The surface chemical properties of bacteria are evaluated by electrokinetic and infrared spectroscopy studies and discussed with reference to their flotation responses. In the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and chalcopyrite adapted Paenibacillus polymyxa cells, xanthate flotation of pyrite is depressed whereas chalcopyrite flotation is unaffected. The present investigation demonstrates that the surface chemical properties of bacteria can be manipulated successfully to achieve desired effect in flotation process.
