Solution pH plays an important role in controlling the surface properties of coal and pyrite in processes like flotation. In the present investigation, the effect of pH on the surface free energy of pyrites, from both coal and ore sources have been studied. The surface free energy of solids is made up of two components, the dispersive surface free energy and the acid-base interaction energy. Various methods have been used by other researchers to evaluate these two components for coal and other solids. But a new approach was used in the present study to evaluate both the components of surface free energy for different pyrites. Results indicate that the dispersion free energy of different pyrites is independent of the solution pH while the acid-base interaction energy is strongly dependent on the solution pH. The change in acid-base interaction energy with pH is more significant for ore pyrite than coal pyrites. Also the dispersion energies of different pyrites are almost the same. But the acid-base interaction energy of the various pyrites is quite different. This probably might be attributed to the different origins of the pyrites. Comparison of the acid-base interaction energy with zeta-potential measurements shows a good correlation between the minimum in the acid-base interaction energy and the pH_(pzc).
