Recovery and selectivity depend on several factors in sulfide flotation. With nickel ores low selectivity between sulfides is often a problem, particularly between pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Process water always contains ions like Ca~(2+), S_2O_3~-, SO_4~(2-), S_3O_6~(2-), S_4O_6~(2-), F~-, NH_2SO_3~-, Cl~-, NO_3, SCN~-, which may influence the surface chemistry and thereby the floatability of minerals. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of Ca~(2+) and S_2O_3~(2-) ions on nickel and copper flotation. The study was done in laboratory scale with real ore samples. The tests were done at alkaline pH. Purified sodium ethyl xanthate was used as a collector while Ca~(2+) and S_2O_3~(2-) ions were tested. The concentrate was collected according to predetermined time-schedule. The ions had an activating effect on pentlandite and chalcopyrite when the test material was ground in steel mill but the floatability of sulfides decreased when grinding was done in ceramic mill. Particularly, the ions had an activating effect in the beginning of flotation after grinding in steel mill when the floatability of sulfides was based on the collector-induced hydrophobicity. On the basis of the results possible activation and depression mechanisms are also suggested.
