Effect of Ca on sphalerite activation by Cu was studied as a function of pH by measuring zeta potential, adsorption kinetics and recovery in micro flotation tests. The zeta potential results showed that Ca adsorbed on sphalerite. The presence of Ca resulted in a significant decrease in Cu adsorption at pH = 9.2 but had less effect at lower pH (3 and 6). The flotation results corroborated the adsorption results: recovery decreased in the presence of Ca at pH = 9.2 and pH = 11.5, but was unaffected at pH = 6.0. Since conditioning with Cu is often done at alkaline pH the observed effect of Ca could be significant.
