The interaction between flotation reagents and the surfaces of sulphide minerals in the pulp takes place in the double layer of the system. In the presence of chalcopyrite only, the double layer of the system would be expected not to be appreciably affected by the presence of ionic species such as copper and iron. However, the presence of such ions seem to drastically change the double layer properties of carrollite leading to an induced positive surface charge. On the basis of the assumption that interaction of sulphide minerals with thiol collectors is electrochemical in nature, then the charged positive surfaces would be expected to undergo, for instance, reduction favouring the anodic oxidation of the collectors to form the dimer products, which are known to be hydrophobic species and would render the latter floatable. Alternatively, assuming that the interaction take place through an ion exchange type of reaction, then, with increased hydroxide type of surface species, the exchange capacities of the ionic collector species would also increase the hydrophobicity of the mineral on which these species form predominately.
