To enhance the oleate flotation of phosphate minerals a nonyl phenol polyethylene glycol ether (Tergitol NP 4) was investigated as a promotor. The beneficial effect of the surfactant was tested by contact angle, micro-flotation and batch flotation experiments. The addition of surfactant did not show any significant change in contact angles in the presence of sodium oleate. The deleterious effect of different concentrations of calcium ions was observed both in contact angle and microflotation tests as they increased reagent consumption in the absence of nonionic surfactant. But, the addition of surfactant resulted in a significant increase in the recovery of pure apatite and calcite in micro-flotation experiments even in the presence of sodium metasilicate and calcium ions. Batch flotation experiments with phosphate ore showed that the presence of the surfactant increased P_2O_5 recovery by 10/15% with minimal effect on grade.
