This paper presents the relation between power and operating variables (impeller rotational speed and airflow rate) in mechanical (conventional) flotation cells with external air blow. The effect of operating variables and net power on metallurgical results is also examined. The flotation cell used was an automatic one equipped with a conventional vaned disc impeller. The effect of the above parameters was investigated during rougher flotation tests using antimonite ore. From the experimental measurements, the net power for the non-aerated pulp as a function of the impeller rotational speed is derived. The relationship between the power ratio and airflow number is also established. Finally, the net power for the aerated pulp and the power intensity (specific power) are expressed as a function of the impeller speed and the airflow rate. From the metallurgical results it is concluded that the efficiency of the flotation process is affected by the hydrodynamic conditions prevailing in the cell. Based on the above results the optimum operating and hydrodynamic conditions for the flotation of antimonite ore are determined.
