The selective flotation of gold from pyrite was studied using 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (DTF) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX). The floatability of gold and pyrite using MBT was higher at pH values from 4 to 6. The MBT adsorption on the gold and pyrite surfaces in acidic medium, was confirmed by FTIR peaks similar to those of the MBT spectrum. On the other hand, the affinity of DTF for the gold surface was rather low and difficult to detect by DRIFTS, except for high DTF concentrations. The adsorption of PAX on gold produced a very high floatability over a broad range of pH at low reagent concentration. The DRIFTS measurements suggested that a chemical adsorption of PAX might take place on these particles, the characteristic IR peaks of dixanthogen and xanthate observed in the differential spectrum. Hallimond tube flotation tests showed a selectivity region for separation of gold from pyrite by using PAX, under oxidizing conditions. At pH values higher than 8, depression of pyrite was increased significantly, while the high recovery of gold remained unchanged.
