Potash ore flotation is carried out in a NaCl-KCl saturated brine with a concentration of about 6 mole/liter. Long chain primary amines, which are practically insoluble in such a medium, are utilized to float selectively sylvite from halite. The process is strongly affected by slimes of insoluble minerals, and there is a close correlation between efficiency of sylvite flotation and slimes depression: without desliming and/or blinding (depressing) of the remaining slimes sylvite flotation is impossible. This paper reports on the optimization procedure in which KC1 flotation is optimized by using the steepest ascent method with experiments following a series of multifactorial designs. A polynomial model, for which the least square algorithm is used to calculate the parameters, gives a good description of the relationship between the metallurgical performance and the dosages of collector and slime blinder. The optimum dosages of both the collector and the slime blinder can readily be obtained from the contour plot resulting from the model; the model can also be used to detect interactions between the tested parameters. The optimum dosages strongly depend on the way in which the frother is utilized confirming that the colloid chemistry of the long chain amines plays a primary role in this process.
