The use of column flotation was considered for "reverse flotation" of iron ore, where the gangue (quartz) was recovered in the froth product from the column. The objective of this work was to determine which of several different column flotation technologies would be most suitable for this type of flotation operation. Studies were carried out using both the Jameson column, and the more conventional Deister column. It was found that a single stage of flotation with the Jameson column gave results comparable to a single stage of flotation with a conventional Wemco flotation cell, and so the Jameson cell was not pursued further. The laboratory-scale Deister column was found to perform well, and gave the best results in a two-stage rougher-cleaner configuration. However, there are often problems in scale-up of laboratory columns to plant scale, because the increase in height and the decrease in the height/diameter ratio at the larger scale allow more axial mixing and bubble coalescence, both of which degrade the column performance. Horizontal baffling has been shown to improve column performance by reducing axial mixing and breaking up large bubbles, and so the use of such baffles is recommended for full-scale columns in this type of application.
