In Germany, an annual amount of approximately 100 million discharge lamps must be disposed of as special waste. While several processes exist for the recycling of the glass, it has so far been impossible to recover the luminophores. The existing proposals for the recovery of luminophores are too cost-intensive. As part of a research project, sponsored by the German Research Council, the TU Clausthal has developed a wet chemical process for the recycling of luminophores, which allows the recovery of pure yttrium/europium oxides, as well as a reusable mixture of aluminate luminophores. The process consists of acid and alkaline leaching followed by precipitation and calcination. Pilot tests have proven the economic efficiency of this process; the production costs were determined at 18 Euro per kilogram yttrium/ europium oxide.
