The surface properties and floatability of enargite (Cu_3AsS_4) have been investigated through measurements of zeta potentials, enargite electrode rest potentials, and Hallimond tube flotation tests. The zeta potential-pH curves showed negative values (-20 mV to -45 mV) from pH = 2 to pH = 12, but with two peaks around pH = 5.5 and pH = 11. From thermodynamic equilibrium diagrams for the As-H_2O system and Eh-pH diagram for enargite, it is postulated that the charged groups on the enargite surface are derived from the equilibrium reactions of the thioarsenate groups. Natural floatability of enargite was discarded in the pH range studied; however, flotation recovery greater than 80% were achieved with 0.1 mg/1 isopropyl xanthate at pH = 10. This suggests that the surface composition of the enargite/solution interface is governed by the chemistry of thio-arsenates, which make enargite floatability different to all other copper sulfides. Its resistance to be depressed by oxidizing agents was remarkable.
