The production of sodium chromate is an important chemical compound for some industries. Egypt imports this material from abroad, although Egypt is rich with chromite ores. This study is devoted to investigate the effect of the use O_2, N_2, and mixture of both, with varying proportions of N_2 on the formation of sodium chromate during the roasting of briquette made by soda ash with chromite ore concentrate (sodium chromate / chromic oxide = 2.5/1 mole ratio) from the El-Baramyia region. The results show that the use of oxygen in the roasting process at 1,100 °C yields more sodium chromate recovery produced than the use of other atmosphere. The results also show that the controlling mechanism for the production of 60% sodium chromate is limited by solid state diffusion. The main phases present in case of using nitrogen gas are FeO(Cr_2O_3)Al_2O_3, (Cr,Fe)_2O_3, Na_2SiO_4, NaAlSiO_4, NaAlSi_3O_8 and small amounts of NaCrO_2, Na_2CrO_4*H_2O and NaCrO_4*H_2O.
