This paper outlines metallurgical results of tests undertaken by using a micropilot scale prototype of an ejector-aerated, bidimensional baffled column for the flotation of a finely disseminated, low-grade gold-bearing pyrite ore. This is now documented with a two-stage, grinding-flotation (pneumomechanical cells) flow sheet. Entrained air holdup was pursued as a function of four independent operating parameters, according to a 2~4 factorial design scheme used for the test planning. Air holdup values up to 49% were secured under a bubbly flowing pattern under stable froth column conditions. The multiple linear regression equation of the air holdup on the running parameters was computed for the design and for optimization of the aerator. The slope angle of the baffle plate and effects of the wash water on the metallurgical results were also studied. Based on the distribution of the mineral values into different product grain-size fractions (concentrates, middlings and tailings), it can be concluded that this system particularly favors the finer fractions' flotation, thus it is suited for the flotation of finely disseminated ores.
