The heat transfer performance of a plastic longitudinal spiral heat exchanger with wet flue gas was investigated experimentally. The heat transfer performance without condensation was compared to convection heat transfer of a fluid flowing in a tube and between parallel plates with equivalent hydraulic diameters. The transport characteristics of flue gas flowing in axial direction in the spiral channel are similar to those for flow between parallel plates. The experimental results for wet flue gas with condensation in the heat exchanger indicated that the heat transfer included significant amounts of both single-phase convection and condensation, which is quite different from that for pure vapor condensation. The classical film model was modified to describe the vapor condensation phenomenon in the vapor-gas mixture. The predictions agree reasonably well with the experimental results.
