"First, do no harm" is a principle tenet of medicine as well as Information Technology. But how does one know if the outcome of a change was positive, negative or neutral? At SAS Institute, performance data was analyzed in an effort to answer that question after the network routing protocol was changed from RIP (Routing Information Protocol) to Cisco's EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol). More than 400,000 throughput and response time measurements, gathered for a month before and after the changeover, were examined to assess the change's impact. The methodology verifies that EIGRP, to 95% certainty, did not harm network performance.
