Twenty years ago, efforts such as the ACES II Upgrade program and the anticipated Crew Escape Technologies demonstration program required new manikins that were representative of human response far beyond the current capabilities. The seats under development would be capable of modifying their accelerations and trajectories in response to real time threats. These seats would also be equipped with life saving devices that would require analysis of performance indicating whether new injury modes were being introduced, or if unsurpassed protection was being provided. The challenge to provide manikins with increased biodynamic response characteristics, and additional data acquisition capability would define a new paradigm in test methodology. In response to this challenge, the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began development of biofidelic test manikins equipped with instrumentation systems that made use of advances in electronics technologies. Research was conducted to develop realistic joint and limb motions for manikin design. Subsequent development and testing resulted in the evolution of manikin technology that has redefined ejection test methodologies. These manikins represent the expanded crewmember sizes ranging from 103-lbs to 245-lbs. Data processing, analysis, and report writing can be quickly accomplished using these new systems. With the successful demonstration of these manikins, the technologies are being transitioned to the user.
