The prefrontal areas that were differentially sensitive to amount of episodic information, retrieval evaluation and easy negative judgment based on novelty heuristic, were investigated in a event-related fMRI memory research, by defining the neural correlates of hit (H), misses (M), and correct rejection (CR) in the recognition of Japanese Kanji words. The imaging results of six undergraduate subjects showed that the neural networks that were sensitive to the amount of episodic information included left anterior PFC and left ventral / dorsolateral PFC; the neural networks that were sensitive to the retrieval evaluation included bilateral anterior cingulate, bilateral ventral PFC and left anterior PFC; and the neural network that was sensitive to the easy negative judgment located in left superior PFC (Brodmann area 8). These results were discussed in association with the neural correlates of retrieval success and retrieval monitoring.
