A comprehensive study to evaluate the global "health" conditions of lake Sirio (Ivrea, Northern Italy) has been conducted on both water and sediments. This lake is eutrophic, despite the absence of direct nutrient inputs and anthropic activities in the basin. The results highlight some of the major changes induced by eutrophication on lacustrine biogeochemical cycles: development of a high pH, precipitation of carbonates from the water column and enhancement of the sedimentation rate, mainly constituted by non-decomposed organic matter.
