Field and pot trials of new formulations of Clincher~R 5%EC were conducted to determine grass control spectrum, application timing, and dose response on rice grass weeds as a post-emergence foliar application in Korea from 1997-2000. Rates tested were from 200 to 500 g ai/ha. No phytotoxicity of Clincher 5% EC on dry seeded and water seeded rice were observed in these tests conditions. When foliar applied before flooding in dry seeded rice paddy, 250g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC (XGA-2468) provided good to excellent control (92 to 100%) of 7-8 leaf stage ECHCG and flowering stage ALOAE until 15 days after application (DAA), with some re-growth at 30DAA. Clincher 5%EC at 400g ai/ha demonstrated excellent efficacy on ECHCG and ALOAE. No phytotoxicity to 8 leaf rice was observed with any rate tested. Under upland condition without rice, excellent post-emergence control of ECHCP at 3-4 leaf, 5-6 leaf and 7-8 leaf was achieved with rates of 250, 300 and 400 g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC (XGA-2468), respectively. Re-growth of ECHCP was observed at lower rates. Excellent control of 3-8 Leaf of DIGSA was obtained with 500g ai/ha. Excellent control of PANBI and SETVI up to 7-8 Leaf was achieved with 500 and 300 g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC, respectively. DIGSA was more tolerant to cyhalofop-butyl than ECHCP, and the weed susceptibility to cyhalofop-butyl was SETVI > PANBI > ECHCP > DIGSA. Under water seeded rice paddy condition in reclaimed land, excellent post-emergence control of LEFCH at 3-4 Leaf, 5-6 Leaf and 7-8 Leaf was provided by 200, 250 and 300 g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC (XGA-2468), respectively, when applied at rice tillering stage as rescue treatment under flooded water condition. Wild rice was insufficiently controlled even at the highest dosage tested of 500g ai/ha. No visual injury to 3-4 tiller stage of water seeded rice was observed at 500 g ai/ha of Clincher 5% EC. Under dry seeded rice field conditions before flooding, Clincher 5%EC formulations with no adjuvant, PG 26-2, or RPE-8020 were compared for efficacy and rice tolerance. Performance of Clincher 5%EC formulations with PG 26-2 and RPE-8020 were equivalent and more efficacious than the Clincher 5%EC with no adjuvant. Pot trials of creeping grasses: Poor control of 3-4 leaf LERJA was seen even at 500 g ai/ha of Clincher 5% ~R EC (XGA-2469). Excellent control of both 5-7 leaf stage and 30-40 cm tall PASDA was seen with 250 g ai/ha of XGA-2469 5%EC and 50 g ai/ha of Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl EC, whereas 71 g ai/ha of Clefoxydim EC provided insufficient control at 20DAA evaluation. Some re-growth was observed at 250 g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC and 50g ai/ha of Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl EC when applied to the 5-7 leaf stage, while rates greater than 250 g ai/ha of Clincher 5%EC providing perfect control until 100DAA. The late application at the 30-40cm tall stage of growth provided slightly better performance than the early application at 5-7 leaf stage.
