SMR does not appear to be the most relevant reference process for advanced ones, since advanced processes are developed in a context of sustainable development. Alkaline electrolysis, being the only mature process that allows CO_2-free hydrogen production, can provide a target production cost for advanced processes. In a context of massive production (plant capacity > 1 kg/s), and depending on the economic context -particularly the electricity price, hydrogen production cost from alkaline electrolysis can be evaluated in a 2.4-3.3 ?/kg range. The main contribution to this cost remains the electricity consumption cost.
