Fly ash from coal combustion process has been under used, and mostly discarded.Attempts have been made previously using fly ash to make brick. Usually substantialamount of other materials such as lime, sand and some chemical were added in theprocess. This paper presents a new study on using fly ash to make brick, using a uniquehigh-pressure compaction process developed for coal log compaction at CPRC. Bricksmade using fly ash were subject to a series of ASTM standard tests. Experiments shownthat bricks made in this process have low permeability, high compressive strength andlow cost due to no chemical additive or additional material was used. Conceptual designof an automated brick making machine and economical feasibility of using this process isalso discussed.
