By applying the principle of heat pump, an ideal heat integrated distillation column (HIDiC) is created, where heat integration between whole rectifying and whole stripping sections are involved. The process can substantially reduce the irreversibility in mass transfer and thus enhance process energy efficiency. Some relevant issues of process design and operation are discussed and valuable results of bench-scale plant experimentation are introduced. The prospective of the ideal HIDiC is also highlighted.
