Italian activities on research, demonstration and market promotion cover all main aspects of photovoltaic technology , from the study of new materials and devices, the development and experimentation on concentrating systems and grid-connected and stand-alone power plants to the dissemination programmes implementation. ENEA (the Italian Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment), CESI (the Institute for research and certification of electric components and systems), MATT (the Ministry of Environment an Land Protection), all the Italian Regions and some Italian PV industries are the most active actors in this scenario. A general overview on the present day activities and future perspectives: R&D and Demonstration, Industry and market development with a particular emphasis on the Italian Roof-top Programme and the business value are the main items discussed in this paper.
