This paper presents the results from theACL-SIGHAN-sponsored First InternationalChinese Word Segmentation Bakeoffheld in 2003 and reported in conjunctionwith the Second SIGHANWorkshopon Chinese Language Processing,Sapporo, Japan. We give the motivationfor having an international segmentationcontest (given that there have been twowithin-China contests to date) and we reporton the results of this first internationalcontest, analyze these results, and makesome recommendations for the future.
