Historically the treatment of soils and sediments by thermal treatment included thermal desorption and/orcombustion. Electro-Petroleum, Inc (EPI) and electrochemical processes, llc (ecp) have investigated the use ofElectroChemical GeoOxidation (ECGO) as an alternative to thermal treatment. In the electrochemical processthe effect of passing Direct Current (DC) through the soil affects the redox conditions in the soil producingsites where oxidation and reduction may take place. The electrochemical process accomplishes the in-situoxidation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other petroleum hydrocarbons in an apparentstepwise manner. Chlorinated Organics may also be destroyed by the process, possibly by a reductiondechlorination process. Since the process takes place at ambient temperatures the risk of forming oxidation,“combustion”, byproducts is negated. The paper will discuss the results of two pilot demonstration of theprocess, one under field conditions where 500 cubic yards of dredged sediments were treated to remove PAHsand the other where simulated crude oil spills were treated. The old adage of Time, Turbulence andTemperature holds in this process when time is extended to days and the turbulence and temperature becomeinsignificant.
