Different from a conventional spectacle lens which consists of two spherical or aspheric surfaces, this kind of spectacle lens consists of one plane surface and a binary diffraction surface, which significantly reduces their thickness and weight. A theoretical design method was developed and a diffraction efficiency formula was established for the binary surface. A binary spectacle lens with a four discrete phase-step binary surface was fabricated using lithography and RIBE (reaction iron beam etching) technology. Experimental results indicate that the spectacle lens fabricated in this way can achieve the same diopters as a conventional spectacle lens, and it can be made much thinner although the spectacle lens has large chromatic variations and low diffraction efficiency problems. Refractive/diffractive hybrid optical design or harmony diffraction can be used to reduce the chromatic variations, and more binary phase steps can be used to increase the diffraction efficiency.
