This study was about nondestructive detection of apple sugar content by means ofNIR (Near Infrared) diffuse reflectance technique. Variance analysis of average absorbencyand RMS (Root Mean Square) noise of NIR spectra indicated that different testing positionshad little influence on spectra acquisition while different testing distances had an oppositeoutcome. The relationship between sugar content and NIR spectra of apples was analyzedvia MLR (Multi Linear Regression) method using software SPSS. Optimal single-wavelength,double-wavelength, triple-wavelength and quaternion-wavelength calibration equations wereestablished to illuminate the relationship. The correlation coefficients ( R ) were 0.621, 0.675,0.797 and 0.822 respectively, SEC (Standard Error of Calibration) were 1.75oBrix, 1.65oBrix,1.34oBrix and 1.27oBrix respectively, and RSEC (Relative Standard Error of Calibration) were13.73%, 12.96%, 11.42% and 10.81% respectively. The results show that NIR diffusereflectance technique is a feasible method for nondestructive detection of apple fruit internalqualities. Furthermore, this study lays a solid foundation for setting up the sugar contentforecasting model of apples.
