Evaluating development wells with MWD alone is astandard practice in offshore environments. However,in deepwater development, wells are rarely routine dueto widely spaced producing take points and minimalpre-development appraisal strategies. This issue isexacerbated as the field (or basin) matures and drillingbecomes more challenging. Typically, redevelopmentwells have increased uncertainty in subsurfaceoutcome, are of lesser (risked) volume potential and aremore complex from a drilling perspective. In thisenvironment, petrophysicists are called upon to reduceuncertainty regarding well/seismic positioning,reservoir connectivity, gravel pack sand size andpermeability data (for near-field exploration targets thathave no core). In the past, most of these answersoriginated from measurements taken during wirelinelogging operations. Now, many of these measurementsare available as MWD tools or can be estimated usingspecialized MWD data.During a recent redevelopment drilling campaign (RamPowell field, deepwater Gulf of Mexico), we testedrelatively new to market drilling bottomhole assembliescontaining sensors, which measure seismic, NMR, andformation pressure information. The objective of thepaper is to describe our learnings from planning andexecuting well evaluations using those specializedtools.
