Our group has developed a drug deliveryplatformi,ii (NANOEDGE) in which submicron drugparticles are reduced in size under high shear andcoated with a minimal amount of surfactant toprevent irreversible aggregation. Comminution isachieved by homogenization, which imparts intenseinertial forces to the particles, largely as a result ofcavitation. To facilitate understanding the importanteffects of such processing on particle size reduction,we have devised a simple empirical model relatingprocessing time (t) to mean volume-weightedparticle diameter (a) as measured by laser lightscattering.
