This paper discusses the issues involved in using solar radiation data from climate change models for design. It suggests that it will be straightforward to use existing computing structures to do this. Interest however centres on the issue of the engineering reliability of the current daily solar radiation estimates in climate change scenarios. Little systematic attention seems to have been given to effective detailed stochastic validation of the radiative components of current climate change models. The correct choice of the stochastic basis for comparisons between observation and model prediction is important. The paper recommends the use of the Cloudless Sky Index for validation of daily global radiation estimates. Stochastic examples are provided for one site, Bracknell near London, using three models.
