Organic petrology is a marginal science that mainly deals with the origin, occurrence, composition, structure and evolution of sedimentary organic matter. The focus of organic petrology is put on the composition characteristics and maturity of organic matter in the source rocks. At present, it has developed into a routine research tool that is widely applied in petroleum exploration and assessment (e.g. Teichmuller, 1986, Smyth et al., 1984; Zhao Shiqing et al., 1990; Xiao Xianming, 1992; Wang Feiyu et al., 1995; Jin Kuili et al., 1997a, 1997b; Zhong Ningning and Qin Yong, 1995; Li Peizhen et al., 1997; Li Xianqing et al., 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000). Based on several years' research results, the authors present organic petrological characteristics of immature source rocks.
