CO_2 can be captured by oxy-combustion of natural gas in a power plant but suffers significant loss of efficiency because of the energy required to produce oxygen. However when used in a Brayton cycle high top temperatures can be used so that the basic cycle efficiency, before oxygen production and CO_2 compression losses, is high. An external source of heat in the form of steam can be added to such a cycle so that this is converted to power with the high efficiency of the basic cycle. Such a hybrid combination allows significant increase in overall efficiency. The amount of heat which can be added in this way is limited to about 45% of the total thermal input.
