摘要

This paper addresses the potential for geological CO_2 storage in structural and stratigraphic traps in the East Irish Sea Basin, which lies offshore between the Isle of Man and the west coast of Cumbria, Lancashire and North Wales, UK. The basin is well placed to receive CO_2 from the nearby major power plants and the many other industrial sources in North Wales and Northwest England. The estimated maximum CO_2 storage potential in its oil and gas fields is 1047 million tonnes. Further storage potential may exist in non-hydrocarbon-bearing, apparently closed structures in the Ormskirk Sandstone Formation, identified from a seismically-derived structure contour map. The maximum total CO_2 storage capacity of these structures is estimated to be 630 Mt. However, the fact that these structures are scattered amongst oil and gas fields but do not contain hydrocarbons indicates that they may not be gas-tight.
