China pig production is in an era of rapid development, thus, occupying an important position in the today's global pig industry. The pig stock in China increased at a ratio of 14% every year in the past 5 years accounting to 51%of world pig stock in the year of 2005. Currently, the major problem that hinders the healthy development of China pig industry is the prevalence of the contagious diseases, among which are those related to respiratory disorders and reproductive failure. The common pathogens in veterinary practice are viruses, which include swine pseudorabies virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, porcine circovirus type 2, Japanese encephalitis virus, and bacteria that are comprised of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Hemophillus parasuis, Streptococcus suis, E. Coli. In order to control these infectious diseases and to increase the economic benefit of the industry, a lot of novel genetic engineering vaccines have been produced. These vaccines consist of gene-deleted vaccine, live viral or bacterial vector vaccine and nucleic acid vaccine. Meanwhile, latex agglutination test kits for ready-to-use nearby pens, high-throughput ELISA and biochip and diagnostic tests for differentiation between infected and immunized animals have also developed and widely used in China. In this review paper, the author also gives a summary of the researches that have been or are conducted in his laboratory, pointing out the possible approaches being taken to address and the future research needed to be performed in order to guarantee and facilitate the industry development.
