The batch fluidization experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of addition of fine powders of different sizes down to sub-microns on the behavior of bed particles in a Powder-Particle Fluidized Bed (PPFB) in terms of the elutriation rate constant of fines and the bed expansion under different superficial gas velocities and static bed heights of coarse particles (alumina balls of 500 μm). When the size of fines was smaller than 10 μm, not only the superficial gas velocity but also the static bed height of coarse particles affected the elutriation rate constant of fines. The ratio of fluidized bed height to static bed height increased sharply with decreasing size of fines from around 10 μm.
