Composite powders of Si3N4-SiC prepared through the combustion of a mixture of silicon powder and carbon black in a nitrogen atmosphere, by the method of SHS (Self-Propagating-High-Temperature-Synthesis), were investigated. The Si3N4SiC composite powders were prepared with SiC contents of 5 %, 15 %, and 25 % respectively. The morphology of the powders were observed by SEM and phase composition was analyzed by XRD. The sintering behaviors of the Si3N4-SiC composite powders were compared with mixture powders of Si3N4 and SiC with same compositions.
