It is undoubted that the growing water scarcity is one of the world's most severe problems. State of theart water purification technologies can convert almost any water into potable water but they do require energy,mainly in the form of electricity.Thus, the water problem can also be seen as an energy problem since seawater, brackish water or freshwater ofunknown quality are abundantly available but significant amounts of energy are required in order to make it suitablefor drinking.In order to have sustainable energy sources, renewable energy sources should be applied. Photovoltaic (PV) poweredwater purification by membrane filtration is an opportunity to solve the issue. It can provide safe drinking water andon top, small independent minigrids that supply people with electricity, too.
