INES / CEA has developed the new MotherPV method (Meteorogical, Optical and Thermal Historiesfor the Energy Rating of PhotoVoltaics) allowing the prediction of the performance of a photovoltaic module for anywell known climate, thanks to a short campaign of measurements at its Cadarache Solar Outdoor Test Facility. Themethod calculates the coefficient expressing the non-linearity of the module’s power for a given set-up of the moduleunder a given climate. This non-linearity coefficient may be combined with other successive losses (shadings,soiling, inverter losses…) to calculate the performance ratio of a grid connected system.The accuracy of the method is similar to the accuracy of the best existing methods. The method is synthetic and usesa simple table of data, which can be printed on the nameplate of the module. It allows not only calculating theperformance of the module for a given climate but also understanding the reasons of this performance, comparingquickly and simply different technologies and climates. The associated module characterization is performed quicklyoutdoors for a limited cost. The method has been proposed for the new IEC 61853 standard on module energy rating.
